The Compassion Project is one of Teen with a Dream’s newer programs and strives to connect communities with pediatric cancer patients. So what is a Compassion Project and what are its impacts?
The Challenge
- Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes. In three minutes from now, a child will be diagnosed with cancer, and another family will be faced with the very real possibility of losing their child.
- Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 15 in the U.S.
- Pediatric Cancer patients undergo treatment multiple times a week, the average treatments last 2-3 years.
- 2/3 of pediatric cancer patients will have long lasting chronic conditions from treatment.
Compassion Bags
These bags are dedicated to stimulating a child’s mind and soul, moreover to simply make them smile. These “survival” kits are geared toward occupying the child during the countless treatment hours.
What it means to the patient receiving a hand built Compassion Project?
- By receiving a Compassion Bag, patients are conveyed the ultimate sense of compassion from a stranger.
- It shows them that they are not alone, and are cared for.
- The Compassion Bag components help combat side effects and engage their mind
- Moreover, by pledging to live compassionately will lay a foundation for a better environment on an individual and communal level.
Social Media + Compassion Project
Each Compassion Bag is complete with a hand written note and social media tag. Patients are able to upload a photo of them with their bag on social media with the designated hashtag. Compassion Bag creators are then able to search this hashtag and see the numerous of patients who receive Compassion Bags. This simple tag, perpetuates the connection even further!
